Social networks – a global phenomenon with a local flavour

As Facebook announces that it has reached 500 million active users, the BBC have published a data-rich article on the popularity (measured by number of users) of the biggest social networking sites.

The article provides both global figures and a breakdown by country which shows that although Facebook dominates in most countries, a mixture of global and regional sites fight for the top 5 places.

Although this is a great article, it’s let down by the fact that the available ‘full data download’ only gives global figures.
